History of the UEFA Champions League

The UEFA Champions League is successor of the former European Champion Clubs’ Cup (European Cup), which was established back in 1955, while the Champions League was introduced in 1992 and since then it became even bigger. UEFA’s Champions League is an annual football competition under the jurisdiction of UEFA (union of European Football Associations) and it has special status since it’s a special tournament for all top division clubs in the relevant country part of UEFA’s national association. This makes the tournament even more prestigious and it’s commonly described as the most prestigious and profitable competitions not only in Europe, but compared to world’s standards. The Champions League is followed by football fans all around the world and it’s a serious market not only for the powerhouses in each of the top football leagues, but it’s also vital for the progress of the not so well ranked UEFA members, as all financial incomes are helping for the development of whole regions – mostly in Eastern Europe.

Back in the days we had more surprises and diversity in the champions, when teams from “smaller” countries (speaking mostly for football level) were more competitive to the main European giants and sides like Celtic, Steaua Bucure?ti, Feyenoord, Aston Villa, Crvena Zvezda Belgrade can boast with such a trophy, but since the new format was launched from season 1992-93, it becomes even more difficult for the underdogs to challenge the big names and as we can see, we have very demonstrative consistency among the top teams, especially in the last decade. Surprises are very unlikely to happen and last time when we had different Champions League finalist, except from the top 4 football countries in Europe (Spain, England, Germany and Italy), was back in season 2003-04 when Porto of Jose Mourinho won over AS Monaco, so this virtually was a clash between leagues which are not in top four, but they`re still part of the European football top-drawer.

Nevertheless, it`s surely pleasure for all football fans to watch their favorite clubs in the Champions League and all neutral supporters (with the club ones as well) have the opportunity to watch competitive matches which they can’t watch nowhere else (pre-season friendlies are not exactly the same… not at all, we believe). Fixtures which are facing clubs from leagues like Spanish La Liga, English Premier League, Bundesliga, Serie A and all other top ranked European leagues, against each other is simply a favorite to the football fans and that’s the main reason what made the Champions League so prestigious for the supporters.

Glorious clubs like Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Liverpool, Ajax, Manchester United, Juventus , Internazionale Milan, AC Milan, Benfica, Nottingham Forest and Porto are among the top winners, while the new generation of ambitious clubs is already keen on winning that trophy, as some of them already did it. Last example was of Chelsea’s triumph back in 2012, while other clubs who have been object of outstanding financial boosts are dreaming to record their names next to those which already have written theirs and they did it with golden chapters.

We also have some magnificent individual efforts on the major continental scene as the modern 21st century rivalry between Leo Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo was transferred in the UEFA Champions League as well, where these two are competing for the all-time goal scorer position, followed by other names like Raul, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Thierry Henry, Alfredo Di Stefano, Andriy Shevchenko, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Eusebio, Filippo Inzaghi and Karim Benzema, who are all behind them (CR7 and Messi), as they form the rest of the top 10 rankings.

Among the players with most Champions League appearances we can spot some living legends like Iker Casillas, Xavi, Ryan Giggs, Paolo Maldini, Clarence Seedorf, Paul Scholes, Roberto Carlos, Cristiano Ronaldo, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and more… What a list, huh?
